Logos
A logo is an easily recognised symbol made with a combination of text and image that identifies a company, a commercial product or any public or private entity.
Making a logo for your business is an integral part of making your brand successful and recognisable. For example, everyone recognises the Apple symbol without the need to have the brand name written on the product because it is already a memorable graphic element that is part of the visual identity of the brand.
One of the most iconic logos in the world is the Nike Swoosh designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971. It mimics the goddess of victory, Nike, in Greek mythology and therefore the company's name. It also looks like a checkmark which evokes something that is done or as the brand itself has marketed before "Just do it".
A logo is important for your business because:
1. It reveals your brand identity: Having your logo printed out on your products or business cards tells your potential customers who you are, and what type of service you sell.
2. It invites new customers to get familiar with your brand: The logo you use should be designed to draw the interest of the public and provoke curiosity, this can be achieved with the use of colours and designs.
3. It distinguishes your brand from the competition: A good logo should dare to be different. For example, in a lot of Italian restaurants is used a moustached cook with a long white hat, and they usually use the Italian flag colours. So, to make yourself stand out from the competition you should try to do something different.
4. It can be everywhere: It is usually simple and relatively small so it is easy to reproduce becoming a way to advertise your brand and message consistently.
Having this in mind, you can start creating a logo for yourself or your business. But, how to design a logo?
To design a logo you need to know your brand personality and choose a design style that reflects it, for example, if you are a creator you might want a more colourful logo with a Sans Serif font for the text which is more modern and transmits creativity. It is important to pick fonts carefully and choose colours that convey the personality and image you want to transmit, and also to analyse the competition and most importantly keep it simple. Simplicity makes a logo recognisable, versatile and memorable without being exaggerated.
