E-Textiles: Wearable technology

Before we start today, I would like to make a quick introduction to Cookies. 

But what are cookies?

Cookies are small pieces of data from a specific website that is stored in a user’s computer while they are browsing the web. They can be to track a site’s visitor count, or even remember your preferred language, log in and payment details on a website, which makes the site more useful to you. Now, let's properly start our post about E-textiles. 

Electronic textiles, also known as “smart” textiles, are fabrics that have electronic features embedded in them to perform various functions, such as electrical, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and magnetic. 
They are smart systems that can detect changes in the body of the person wearing the textile and use that to adapt to various situations. 




Many people are not familiar with e-textiles even though they have become popular more recently in sports contexts to improve performance, and also in the fashion industry, for aesthetic purposes, and because of their capacity to interact with the surrounding environment and external devices. 

In the sports scenario, for example, we have the new swimming suit technology, where the fabric causes lower friction, abdominal compression, stability and support for the body if placed correctly, it enhances the athletes’ performance. The most famous one is The LZR Racer developed by Speedo as you can see below:

In fashion, we also have a variety of E-textiles with features that can facilitate human interaction with the environment and react to changes in it, for example, solar-powered clothing. 

The University of Tokyo and the research institute RIKEN developed a super-thin organic solar cell that can be heat-printed onto clothes and has been widely utilised to create the most diverse types of solar-powered clothing ever since. 

One very popular designer is Pauline Van Dongen. She has a variety of dresses solar powered that can be used to power portable devices and wearable technology, this way we don't need to carry around a battery or adapter.
