Do you have a Digital Personality?

A digital personality is a term used to describe an online personal identity, which means, it is what people "see" when they come across the traces you leave online. And in today’s world, it is very likely to be the first impression someone will have of you if they search for or stumble upon you in a digital environment.

Now, here is the question, is your digital personality the real you?

There are a lot of reasons why people are not transparent about their real personalities online. This can be because they don’t want to share certain traumas or personal matters with people they don’t know in real life or because they think that to be liked and grow a following or a fan base they need to behave or think in a certain way, therefore, they create a false persona that will be flawless and adored.

It can be a good thing to not show entirely who you are online because you feel safer knowing that people don’t know your personal details. This way, you feel more in control because you are only showing what you are comfortable with. However, it also has bad sides, for example, you will never be in total control of your digital persona because you will be continually challenged by the rapid development of new content and new creators, which means you need to please an audience and deliver the content they expect from you. Also, it can help develop different issues with self-image, for example, teens thinking they need to be perfect because everyone else on the internet is.

But, technology can also mean creating a digital person in real life. There are a lot of new developments that help people improve their quality of life, for example, the British amputee, Tilly Lockey. She is known for her bionic arms developed by Open Bionics, which she has helped to create herself.

The bionic arms helped her to not be afraid to put herself out there and to lead a relatively normal life without the struggles a person with a disability would have. Tilly refers to them as her 'Hero Arms' and transforms disability into a superpower, using her social media following to promote self-love and body positivity. If you would like to know more about Tilly, you can watch the video below where she talks about her life with her bionic arms.
